Story

We have registered for our ninth time to participate in the 2023 Run of Hope Seattle on Sunday, September 24th. Please join us on Sunday at Seward Park at 10am. 100% of your donation will be sent to Seattle Children's Hospital to fund pediatric cancer research. We will also hold a Vashon Run of Hope on Saturday, September 23rd at the Island Center Forest at 10am, for them islanders that wish to not cross them seas (select 'virtual registration' for this option).
I was diagnosed at the age of three months with recurrent ependymoma brain cancer. I have suffered numerous relapses over the course of a lifetime and still struggle today. But I haven't let these things define me, I am now 15 years old and living a wonderful life. I live with my mom, dad, and 5 chickens and I am in 9th grade. My hobbies include performing at the Vashon Center for the Arts musical program, video games, and traveling. I attend many clubs and events at school, including a program called Sisterhood, for which in 2020 I helped raise $9,500 and took the title of Unofficial Mayor of Vashon along with my co-electorates. Run of Hope is something I look forward to every year. I love reaching out to people and doing fundraisers to help raise funds for an issue that is so dear to me. In total over the 9 years, Team Maarten has raised over 100,000 dollars for the Run of Hope from friends and family, and even people I don't know that donate simply because they heard of this cause. To all the people that have donated in the past, thank you so much for helping with this seriously understated issue. If you're new, I hope you would consider joining our family by donating or even joining us in Seattle or on Vashon this year for the Run of Hope. Maarten signing off.
